Common Questions and Answers

Why chose an NVQ?

  • It is a nationally recognised qualification that is based upon pre-approved national occupational standards for the construction sector
  • It offers value for money when compared against its academic equivalents
  • There is no need to take time out from the workplace that can be disruptive for busy construction personnel
  • It is open to all learners aged 16 and over with no pre-qualification entry requirements
  • It is flexible – you can work at your own pace starting and completing the coursework at any time within the calendar year, with the ability to take study breaks, if necessary, for work or personal reasons
  • It is possible to readily transfer between NVQs post-registration should both learner and assessor deem that this is necessary
  • It offers a vocational route to professional membership of a number of respected industry bodies within the construction sector
  • It offers a vocational route to obtaining a CSCS card that recognises the cardholders competency levels against a nationally recognised standard

What is an NVQ?

An NVQ is an internationally and nationally recognised work-based qualification that give a learner the ability to develop and demonstrate externally their competence in the area of work or job role to which the qualification relates.

It comprises a requisite number of units that are assessed by a qualified assessor to reflect how you satisfy work objectives based on the relevant work activity.

Dependent on the NVQ, there will be a combination of compulsory and optional units to complete that the assessor will provide guidance on, dependent on the learner’s work experience and role.

Which NVQ?

The assessor works with the learner to determine the best NVQ for them.

The prospective learner is sent a profiling form for the NVQ which is a helpful tool in determining the appropriate NVQ as well as outlining the units covered so that the learner has an idea of what is involved in the NVQ.

Current job roles and responsibilities can give a preliminary indication of the NVQ best suited to the individual.

The list below is not exhaustive nor definitive but purely for guidance.

What is involved?

Upon registration, an e-portfolio account is created for the learner and an induction date scheduled with the assessor. During induction the assessor will outline Centre policies, assist the learner in how to use the e-portfolio platform, go through the NVQ process and requirements, determine an assessment plan/initial targets for the learner and a date for their next catch up.

The e-portfolio system allows work to be uploaded and assessed in a timely manner and enables learner progress to be tracked by an employer as well as providing a robust audit trail for all users of the e-portfolio system.

Written templates can be uploaded by the learner and/or recorded professional discussions held with the assessor to cover the knowledge part of the NVQ. The assessment instrument is the choice of the learner.

Videos, witness testimonies and physical  documentation are some of the evidence types that can be uploaded to the e-portfolio platform by the learner.

When all units have been completed and approved, CASL claim the Certificate from the awarding body Pearson.

The learners work portfolio is available to the Pearson audit team in accordance with the Centre data retention policy and GDPR regulations to ensure that nationally set standards continue to be met.

Cost and Funding Support?

The cost of each NVQ is outlined within our Welcome Booklet and can be provided upon request. The fee includes both the assessment fees for the NVQ process and the registration costs to enrol with the awarding body Pearson. Pearson registration costs are subject to annual increases as set by them as the awarding body.

CASL is a recognised provider within the newly created CITB Training Provider Network programme. We will provide an update on what membership of this network will mean for our construction clients as it develops.

CITB achievement grants are available upon completion of NVQs, amounting to ÂŁ1,500 for L5, L6 and L7 NVQs and ÂŁ1,250 for L3 and L4 supervisory NVQs. These rates will be reduced to ÂŁ600 for all NVQ levels (except the level 7) completed after the 31 December 2025.

Details or assistance with CITB funding options available for NVQ training can be obtained from local CITB advisors or contact Jayne or Vanessa at the Centre and we can help you find the necessary support and assistance within the CITB network.

Is there a time limit on when the NVQ has to be completed by?

CASL provide a bespoke and flexible service. Although our terms and conditions are to support the learner for an eighteen month period from the point of induction, our assessors can continue to provide assistance beyond this period if the learner can demonstrate that they are continuing to make progress on their studies. Any extension on the support period is at the discretion of the Managing Director.
